About the Compilation of Presidential Documents

What is the Compilation of Presidential Documents?

The Compilation of Presidential Documents (CPD) collection is the official publication of materials released by the White House Press Secretary. It comprises the Daily Compilation of Presidential Documents (January 20, 2009 – present) and its predecessor, the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents (with electronic access from 1993 –January 20, 2009). The Compilation of Presidential Documents is published by the Office of the Federal Register (OFR), National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) under the authority of the Federal Register Act (44 U.S.C. Ch. 15; 1 CFR part 10).

Updated regularly by OFR editors as information is released by the White House Press Office, the Compilation of Presidential Documents includes such material as:

• Speeches and remarks
• News conferences
• Communications to Congress and Federal agencies
• Statements regarding bill signings and vetoes
• Proclamations
• Executive orders
• Appointments and nominations
• Resignations and retirements

It also includes the following supplementary material compiled by OFR editors:

• Acts approved by the President
• White House Press Releases
• Digest of Other White House Announcements
• Nominations Submitted to the Senate

How are documents prepared for publication?

Documents published in the Compilation of Presidential Documents are reviewed for accuracy and annotated with additional information by OFR editors to provide an authoritative record of the Presidency. Every effort is made to ensure accuracy: Remarks are checked against an audio or video recording (unless audio/video is unavailable, in which case this will be noted), and signed documents are checked against the original (when available, otherwise noted). Notes are provided by the editors for purposes of identification and clarity. The materials are organized in chronological order, and the dates shown in the headings are the dates of the documents or events. When the White House Press Office release date differs from the date of the document or event itself, this is indicated in the note at the end of the document. Remarks were delivered in Washington, DC, unless otherwise indicated. The times noted are local times. Category, subject, and name indexes are included in each document to enhance online search efforts.

Publication Background

The Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents was introduced in 1965 to provide a broad range of Presidential materials to the public in a timely manner. On January 20, 2009, the print-format Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents was superseded by the online Daily Compilation of Presidential Documents to provide more immediate access to Presidential documents by making materials available in electronic format on a daily basis.

You can find and search the Compilation of Presidential Documents by:

• Using Basic Search, enter: collection:cpd presdocnum:2005-16
• Using Advanced Search, select Compilation of Presidential Documents under Refine by Collection, then under Search In select Presidential Document Number from the first box and enter 2005-16 in the next box

Search Presidential Documents by Document Category – For example, presidential documents that are proclamations.

• Using Basic Search, enter: cpdcategory:proclamation
• Using Advanced Search, select Compilation of Presidential Documents under Refine by Collection, then under Search In select Document Category from the first box and enter proclamation in the next box

Search Presidential Documents by Date Range and Keyword – For example, presidential documents between April 1, 2008 and May 30, 2008 with the keyword basketball.

• Using Basic Search, enter: basketball collection:cpd publishdate:range(2008-04-01,2008-05-30)
• Using Advanced Search, select Date is Between from the box under Date Range, enter or select 04/01/2008 in the next box and enter or select 05/30/2008 from the last box, select Compilation of Presidential Documents under Refine by Collection, then under Search In enter basketball in the second box

Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents URLs

GovInfo uses two key pieces of information to construct predictable URLs to documents and the Details pages. The Granule ID for the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents is used to identify the individual documents within a weekly issue and the Package ID is used to identify an individual weekly issue.

Note: Sequence Number is only used when there are more than one document starting on a single page. The first document will not have a Sequence Number, but any additional documents will have a Sequence Number starting with the number 2. FrontMatter is used for the title page and table of contents of an issue.
