[Federal Register Volume 80, Number 43 (Thursday, March 5, 2015)] [Notices] [Pages 12042-12043] From the Federal Register Online via the Government Publishing Office [www.gpo.gov] [FR Doc No: 2015-05098] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION [NRC-2014-0273] Impact of Variation in Environmental Conditions on the Thermal Performance of Dry Storage Casks AGENCY: Nuclear Regulatory Commission. ACTION: Draft NUREG; request for comment. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY: The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is issuing for public comment a draft NUREG, NUREG-2174, ``Impact of Variation in Environmental Conditions on the Thermal Performance of Dry Storage Casks.'' This report evaluates spent fuel dry storage cask thermal impact of varying environmental conditions and transient thermal behavior when subjected to a sudden boundary condition change. Different cask designs are evaluated (vertical underground, vertical aboveground, and horizontal aboveground). The NRC staff will consider the analysis results in this report when performing technical reviews, applicants should consider them when applying for cask certification. These results can be used as additional guidance when considering the thermal impact of the environmental factors in the thermal performance of dry storage systems. II. Discussion The NRC is issuing Draft ``Impact of Variation in Environmental Conditions on the Thermal Performance of Dry Storage Casks.'' The draft NUREG-2174 report evaluates the thermal impact of varying environmental conditions and transient thermal behavior when subjected to a sudden boundary condition change in spent fuel dry storage casks. Different cask designs are evaluated in the draft NUREG report. The NRC will consider the analysis results in the report when performing technical reviews, therefore applicants should consider them when applying for cask certification. The analysis results in draft NUREG-2174 can be used as additional guidance when considering the thermal impact of the environmental factors in the thermal performance of dry storage systems. The purpose of this notice is to provide the public with an opportunity to review and provide comments on Draft NUREG-2174, ``Impact of Variation in Environmental Conditions on the Thermal Performance of Dry Storage Casks.'' Any comments received will be considered in the final version or subsequent revisions of the draft NUREG. Dated at Rockville, Maryland, this 24th day of February, 2015.
