Military Bases: Letters and Requests Received on Proposed Closures and Realignments (Letter Report, 05/25/93, GAO/NSIAD-93-173S). This supplement to the GAO report analyzing the Pentagon's selection process for base closures and realignments (GAO/NSIAD-93-173, Apr. 1993) contains letters written to GAO by many interested parties, including Members of Congress, local government officials, and private citizens. In some cases, the correspondence and attached materials, such as analyses and evaluations, provided useful leads. In other instances, the materials added support to issues GAO was actively pursuing. Although GAO was unable to follow up on many of the issues because of time constraints, it believes that this correspondence may be useful to the Base Closure Commission as it considers the proposed closures and realignments. --------------------------- Indexing Terms ----------------------------- REPORTNUM: NSIAD-93-173S TITLE: Military Bases: Letters and Requests Received on Proposed Closures and Realignments DATE: 05/25/93 SUBJECT: Base closures Base realignments Military bases Reductions in force Site selection Defense contingency planning Records (documents) Defense economic analysis Military cost control Future budget projections ************************************************************************** * This file contains an ASCII representation of the text of a GAO * * report. Many interested parties, including Members of Congress, local government officials, and private citizens, have sent us correspondence on base closures. Several of these letters were from multiple requesters and included attachments of data, analyses, and/or evaluations. Additionally, some were delivered as part of a briefing or explanatory presentation. In some instances, the letters and material provided useful leads. In other cases, the materials add support to issues we were actively pursuing. We were not able to follow up on many of the issues or points because of the limited time available to us. However, we believe that the letters and materials may be helpful to the Commission as it considers the proposed closures and realignments. Consequently, we are providing all of the letters and materials to the Commission for consideration. Appendix I contains copies of the letters and some of the materials we received. We are sending copies of this report to the Chairmen, Senate and House Committees on Armed Services and Subcommittees on Defense, Senate and House Committees on Appropriations; individual Members of Congress; and the Secretaries of Defense, the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. We will also make copies available to others on request. This supplement was prepared under the direction of Donna M. Heivilin, Director, Defense Management and NASA Issues, who may be reached on (202) 512-8412 if you or your staff have any questions. Charles A.
