Ballistic Missile Defense: Information on Theater High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System (Briefing Report, 01/27/94, GAO/NSIAD-94-107BR). The estimated cost for the Theater High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon system is $14.5 billion. The Pentagon plans to buy 1,422 THAAD missiles, 99 launchers, and 18 radars. The THAAD demonstration/validation contracts were awarded in 1992, and the program is scheduled to begin engineering and manufacturing development in 1996 and begin low-rate initial production in 1999. THAAD, the upper tier of a two-tier theater defense system, is intended to defend against medium- to long-range theater ballistic missiles. In developing countries, more than 30 types of theater ballistic missiles are either operational or in development. The number of countries with longer range theater missiles is expected to increase. --------------------------- Indexing Terms ----------------------------- REPORTNUM: NSIAD-94-107BR TITLE: Ballistic Missile Defense: Information on Theater High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System DATE: 01/27/94 SUBJECT: Ballistic missiles Advanced weapons systems Air defense systems Developing countries Intercontinental ballistic missiles Warning systems Defense procurement Defense contingency planning Research and development costs Defense capabilities IDENTIFIER: Theater Missile Defense-Ground Based Radar Patriot PAC-3 SDI Theater High Altitude Area Defense System Argentina Brazil China Egypt India Iran Iraq Israel Libya North Korea Pakistan Saudi Arabia South Africa South Korea Syria Taiwan Vietnam Yemen Soviet Union Scud Missile Patriot Missile System SDI Strategic Defense Initiative Program THAADS ************************************************************************ We regret that the full text of this item is presently unavailable.
