August 1
In the morning, the President traveled to Jersey City, NJ, where he met
with families from the State to discuss their problems with the health
care system. In the late afternoon, he returned to Washington, DC.
August 2
In the evening, the President and Hillary Clinton attended a Democratic
National Committee fundraiser at a private residence in Oxon Hill, MD.
The President declared major disasters in Oregon and Washington
following severe damage to the ocean salmon fishing industries caused by
the El Nino weather pattern and recent drought.
The White House announced that the President has invited President
Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine to Washington, DC, for an official working
visit on November 29.
The President announced his intention to appoint Dolores Kohl as a

In the morning, the President and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton returned
to Washington, DC. Later in the morning, the President met with the Law
Enforcement Steering Committee.
The President announced his intention to nominate Vincent Sorrentino to
be a member of the Advisory Board of the Saint Lawrence Seaway
Development Corporation at the Department of Transportation.
August 9
In the morning, the President met with business leaders to discuss
health care reform.
The President announced his intention to appoint Jorge Perez to the
National Council on the Arts.
The White House announced that the President has directed that the
Deputy Secretary of Defense and the Director of Central Intelligence
conduct an immediate inquiry into the National Reconnaissance Office
headquarters construction project and that the project be declassified.

Later in the afternoon, the President met with President Meles Zenawi,
head of the transnational government of Ethiopia.
The President announced his intention to nominate Bruce Morrison as
Chair of the Federal Housing Finance Board.
The President announced his intention to nominate J. Clifford Hudson as
a member and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Securities Investor
Protection Corporation.
The President announced his intention to nominate Patricia Hill Williams
as a member of the Inter-American Foundation Board of Governors.
The President announced his intention to appoint Kristine Norosz as a
member of the International Pacific Halibut Commission.
The President announced his intention to appoint Billie Maxine Glory and

In the morning, following a breakfast with Cabinet members, the
President traveled to Minneapolis, MN.
In the evening, the President returned to Andrews Air Force Base, MD,
where he was joined by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton. They then went to
Camp David, MD.
The President named Jodie R. Torkelson as Deputy Assistant to the
President for Management and Administration, effective September 1.
The President announced his intention to nominate Lori Esposito Murray
to be Assistant Director for the Multilateral Affairs Bureau, U.S. Arms
Control and Disarmament Agency.
August 14
In the morning, the President and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton traveled
from Camp David, MD, to Temple Hills, MD, where they attended services
at the Full Gospel A.M.E. Zion Church. The President and Hillary Clinton
returned to Camp David, MD, in the afternoon.
August 15
In the morning, the President and Hillary Clinton returned to the White
House from Camp David.
The President announced his intention to appoint Alan Krueger as Chief
Economist at the Department of Labor.
The President announced his intention to appoint Gary Rodrigues and Lucy
Williams to the Advisory Council on Unemployment Compensation.
The President announced his intention to appoint the following
individuals to be members of the National Commission for Employment

Surgeon General of the Public Health Service. Following the meeting, the
President had lunch with the Vice President.
August 22
The White House announced the President will attend the summit of the
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Indonesia, November 14-16.
The President also has accepted the invitations of President Fidel Ramos
of the Philippines for a state visit in Manila on November 13 and of
President Soeharto of Indonesia for a state visit in Jakarta on November
16.
August 24
The White House announced that President Nelson Mandela of South Africa
has accepted the President's

The President announced his intention to nominate Yerker Andersson,
Audrey McCrimon, Debra Robinson, and Irving Zola as members of the
National Council on Disability.
The President announced his intention to nominate Rhea L. Graham to be
Director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Department of the Interior.
The President announced his intention to nominate Alfred H. Moses to be
Ambassador to Romania.
August 26
In the evening, the President and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton traveled
to Martha's Vineyard, MA, for a vacation.
The President announced his intention to nominate Peter Jon de Vos to be
Ambassador to Costa Rica.
The White House announced that the President has nominated Gen. Ronald
R. Fogelman, USAF, to be Chief of Staff of the Air Force.
The White House announced that the President has asked a delegation of
Americans, headed by C. Payne Lucas, president of Africare, to travel on
his behalf to Burundi, Rwanda, and eastern Zaire, August 27-31. The
delegation will urge resolution of the political crisis in Burundi and
review relief efforts for Rwandan refugees.
August 29
The President announced his intention to appoint Anita Arnold to be a
member of the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts.
September 2
The President announced his intention to appoint R. Keith Higginson as a
member of the Western Water Policy Review Advisory Commission.
September 5
In the morning, the President traveled from Martha's Vineyard, MA, to
Bath, ME, where he toured the U.S.S. Laboon under construction at the
Bath Iron Works Corp. In the afternoon, he returned to Martha's
Vineyard.
September 6
The President announced his intention to nominate George J. Opfer to be
Inspector General for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The President announced his intention to nominate Jacquelyn L. Williams-
Bridgers to be Inspector General for the Department of State.
The President announced his intention to appoint Jeffrey H. Smulyan as
Head of the U.S. Delegation to the International Telecommunications
Union Plenipotentiary Conference in Kyoto, Japan, September 19-October
15.
September 7
In the afternoon, the President and Hillary Clinton returned from a
vacation on Martha's Vineyard, MA, to Washington, DC, where they stayed
at Blair House, their residence until completion of remodeling of the
Residence at the White House.
The President announced his intention to appoint Ralph B. Everett,
Burnett Joiner, Earl S. Richardson, and Myer L. Titus to the President's
Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
September 8
The President announced his intention to nominate Debbie Branson as Vice
Chair and public member of the Board of Directors of the Securities
Investor Protection Corporation.
September 9
In the morning, the President traveled to New Orleans, LA, where he
attended the Democratic National Committee Business Leadership Forum
luncheon and met with the executive board of the National Conference of
Black Mayors. In the afternoon, he returned to Washington, DC.
The President announced his intention to nominate Norwood J. Jackson,
Jr., as Inspector General for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
The President announced his intention to nominate James (Bum) Atkins as
Chair and member and Scott Lukins as a member of the Federal Retirement
Thrift Investment Board.
The President announced his intention to nominate Martha Farnsworth
Riche of Maryland as Director of the Bureau of the Census, Department of
Commerce.

MD. In the afternoon, they returned to Camp David.

In the morning, the President and Hillary Clinton returned to the White
House.
The President announced his intention to nominate Charles E. Redman to
be Ambassador to Germany and Marc Grossman to be Ambassador to Turkey.
September 13
In the evening, the President attended the Professional Golfers
Association President's Cup Dinner at the White House.

severe storms and flooding which began August 8.
The President declared a major disaster in the State of California and
ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in
the area struck by the continuing effects of the warm water currents
known as El Nino on the 1994 Coho salmon fishing season, May 1-October
31.
The President announced his intention to nominate Clifford O'Hara,
Albert Nahmad, and Vince Ryan to the Board of the Panama Canal
Commission.
The President announced his intention to appoint Frank Annunzio to serve
as Chairman and John Pierce, Thomas K. Thomas, and Agnes Vaghi as
members of the Board of Trustees of the Christopher Columbus Fellowship
Foundation.
The President announced his intention to appoint Thomas A. Farrington,
Kassie Freeman, and William (Sonny) Walker to the President's Board of

The President announced his intention to nominate Howard Terry Rasco,

The White House announced that the President requested that former

Assistant Secretary for International Communications and Information

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali and President Alija Izetbegovic
of Bosnia at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Following the meetings, he
hosted a reception for African heads of state who attended the General
Assembly.
September 26
In the afternoon, the President met with President Franjo Tudjman of
Croatia at the United Nations Building. Later in the afternoon, the
President returned to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel where he had meetings
with President Heydar Aliyev of Azerbaijan, President Ion Iliescu of
Romania, and President Carlos Salinas of Mexico.
In the evening, the President returned to Washington, DC.
The President announced his intention to nominate Dennis M. Duffy as
Assistant Secretary for Policy and Planning for the Department of
Veterans Affairs.
The White House announced that the President has invited Crown Prince
Hassan of Jordan and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres of Israel to a
trilateral meeting at the White House on October 3.
September 28
In the evening, the President and Hillary Clinton attended a dinner
hosted by President Boris Yeltsin of Russia and Naina Yeltsin at the new
Russian Embassy.
The President announced his intention to nominate Martin Neil Baily as a

In the morning, the President attended the Senate prayer breakfast on
Capitol Hill.

then participated in a video teleconference with military commanders in
Haiti. In the afternoon, he returned to Washington, DC.
In the late afternoon, the President met with Prime Minister Chuan
Likphai of Thailand.
The President declared a major disaster in the Republic of the Marshall
Islands and ordered Federal aid to supplement the Republic's recovery
efforts in the area struck by high tides.
The President announced that he has nominated Robert Pitofsky as Chair
of the Federal Trade Commission.
The President announced his intention to appoint Gov. William J.
Sheffield as Chair and member of the Federal Salary Council.
The President announced his intention to appoint Gov. George A. Sinner
as Chair and a member of the White House Commission on Presidential

the Ford Mustang plant.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Detroit, MI, where he met
with United Auto Workers union leaders at the Westin Renaissance Hotel.
He then went to the Detroit Free Press Building where he met with the
members of the newspaper's editorial board. He returned to Washington,
DC, in the evening.
The President announced the nomination of Charles (Lindy) Marinaccio as
a member of the Board of Directors of the Securities Investor Protection
Corporation.
The President announced his intention to appoint Mufi Hannemann as
Representative to the South Pacific Commission.
October 12
In the afternoon, the President met with Prime Minister Anibal Cavaco
Silva of Portugal. Following the meeting, the President and Hillary
Clinton hosted a reception on the State Floor for members of the
Portuguese-American community.
The President announced his intention to nominate Howard W. Cannon,
William Quinn, and Lynda Hare Scribante as members of the Board of
Trustees for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education

The President announced his intention to appoint Ygnacio Garza, Peter
Silva, and Lynda Taylor as members of the Board of Directors of the

In the evening, the President and Hillary Clinton hosted a dinner at the
White House honoring arts and humanities awards recipients.
The President announced that he has appointed the following four members

In the morning, aboard Air Force One en route to Albquerque, NM, the
President had telephone conversations with King Hussein of Jordan and
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel to congratulate them on the
Israel-Jordan peace treaty and with Chancellor Helmut Kohl of Germany to
offer congratulations on his victory in the German election.
In the afternoon, the President met with Latino leaders at the
Albuquerque Convention Center. Following the meeting, he returned to
Washington, DC.
The White House announced that the President has accepted the invitation
of King Hussein of Jordan and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel to
participate in the signing ceremony for the Israel-Jordan peace treaty
on October 26.
October 18
In the evening, the President and Hillary Clinton attended the
Democratic National Committee Jewish Leadership Forum dinner at the
Corcoran Gallery of Art.
The President announced his intention to appoint Jewell Jackson McCabe
to be a member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.
