The following list includes the President's public schedule and other 
items of general interest announced by the Office of the Press Secretary 
and not included elsewhere in this book.

July 1

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. He then 
traveled to Jackson, MS, arriving in the afternoon. Upon arrival, he met 
with USA Freedom Corps volunteer Cameron Fox and 
military personnel and their families.
Later in the afternoon, at a private residence, the President attended a 
Mississippi Victory Committee and Senator Roger Wicker fundraiser luncheon. Later, he traveled to North Little 
Rock, AR, where, upon arrival, he met with USA Freedom Corps volunteer 
Robbie Powell.
Later in the afternoon, the President traveled to Little Rock, AR, 
where, at a private residence, he attended an Arkansas Victory 2008 
reception. While leaving Little Rock, he stopped to meet individuals 
attending a birthday party for 7-year-old Marby Meadors.
In the evening, the President returned to Washington, DC.
The President announced his intention to nominate Robert 
Hastings to be Assistant Secretary of 
Defense (Public Affairs).
The President announced his intention to designate Gordon S. 
Heddell as Acting Inspector General of the 
U.S. Department of Defense.

July 2

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing.
In the afternoon, the President participated in separate interviews with 
foreign print and television journalists. Later, he had a telephone 
conversation with President Alvaro Uribe Velez of Colombia to congratulate him on the rescue of 15 
hostages from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

July 3

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, in 
the Situation Room, he had a video teleconference with Prime Minister 
Nuri al-Maliki of Iraq. He then traveled to 
the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
Later in the morning, at the National Naval Medical Center, the 
President participated in an interview with Mike Emanuel of FOX News. He then visited with wounded U.S. military 
personnel and presented Purple Heart medals to servicemembers.
In the afternoon, the President returned to Washington, DC.
The White House announced that the President will welcome Prime Minister 
Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani of Pakistan 
to the White House on July 28.
The White House announced that the President and Mrs. Bush will travel 
to South Korea, Thailand, and China in August.

July 4

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
traveled to Charlottesville, VA, where, upon arrival, he met with USA 
Freedom Corps volunteer Devy Goradia. He then 
toured Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.
In the afternoon, the President returned to Washington, DC.

July 5

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing.
In the afternoon, the President and Mrs. Bush traveled to Chitose, 
Japan, arriving the following afternoon.

July 6

In the afternoon, upon arrival at New Chitose Airport, the President and 
Mrs. Bush participated in an arrival ceremony. They then traveled to the 
Windsor Hotel Toya Resort and Spa in Toyako, Japan.
In the evening, the President and Mrs. Bush participated in a social 
dinner with Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and his 
wife Kiyoko.

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing.
In the afternoon, the President participated in a working lunch and 
photo opportunity with Group of Eight (G-8) leaders and Africa outreach 
representatives. Later, he participated in a meeting with G-8 leaders 
and Africa outreach representatives.
In the evening, the President met with Junior 8 student leaders. Then, 
he and Mrs. Bush attended entertainment and a social dinner with G-8 
leaders and their spouses.

July 8

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
participated in a G-8 summit meeting.
In the afternoon, the President participated in the G-8 summit official 
photograph. He then participated in a working lunch and meeting with G-8 
leaders.
In the evening, the President participated in a working dinner with G-8 
leaders.
The White House announced that the President will welcome President 
Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of Tanzania to 
the White House on August 29.

July 9

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
participated in a working breakfast with G-8 leaders and outreach 
country representatives. He then participated in a meeting with the 
leaders of major world economies.
In the afternoon, the President participated in a photo opportunity with 
the leaders of major world economies. He then participated in a working 
lunch with G-8 leaders and outreach country representatives.
Later in the afternoon, the President met with President Lee Myung-
bak of South Korea. He and Mrs. Bush then 
returned to Washington, DC, crossing the international dateline and 
arriving in the afternoon.
The President declared a major disaster in Kansas and ordered Federal 
aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by 
severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes from May 22 to June 16.
The President declared a major disaster in Oklahoma and ordered Federal 
aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by 
severe storms and flooding from June 3 to 20.
The President declared a major disaster in South Dakota and ordered 
Federal aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area 
struck by severe storms and flooding from June 2 to 12.

July 10

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing.
The President announced his intention to nominate Anthony W. Ryan to be Under Secretary of the Treasury (Domestic 
Finance) and that he has designated him as Acting Under Secretary of the 
Treasury (Domestic Finance).
The President announced that he has nominated Ruth Y. Goldway to be Commissioner of the Postal Regulatory 
Commission.
The President announced that he has nominated Joyce Lee Malcolm and Robert L. Paquette to be members of the National Council on the Humanities.
The President announced that he has nominated Clifford D. May to be a member of the Broadcasting Board of 
Governors.

July 11

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
had a telephone conversation with President Abdullah Gul of Turkey to express his condolences for the deaths 
of Turkish police officers who were killed while defending the U.S. 
Consulate in Istanbul against a terrorist attack on July 9 and to 
discuss Turkey's role in Iraq. He then had a telephone conversation with 
President Khalifa bin Zayid Al Nuhayyan of the United Arab Emirates to thank him for the 
country's cancellation of Iraq's debt and for reopening their Embassy in 
Iraq and appointing an Ambassador to Iraq.
In the afternoon, the President and Mrs. Bush traveled to Camp David, 
MD.
The White House announced that the President will welcome President 
Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim 
Thaci of Kosovo to the White House on July 21.
The President announced that he has named Ryan Bounds as Special Assistant to the President for Domestic 
Policy.
The President announced that he has named Ashok M. Pinto as Associate Counsel to the President.

Alexandria, VA, where they met with Tony's family and expressed their 
condolences for Tony's death on July 12. They then returned to 
Washington, DC.
During the day, the President met with Special Envoy to Sudan Richard S. 
Williamson.
The White House announced that the President will welcome President 
Blaise Compaore of Burkina Faso to the White 
House on July 16.
The President declared a major disaster in Michigan and ordered Federal 
aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by 
severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding from June 6 to 13.

July 15

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing.
In the afternoon, in the Oval Office, the President participated in a 
photo opportunity with the 2008 MATHCOUNTS National Competition Award 
recipients.
The President announced his intention to nominate Thomas J. 
Madison to be Administrator of the Federal 
Highway Administration at the Department of Transportation.
The President announced his intention to nominate David Reid 
Murtaugh to be Deputy Director for State, 
Local, and Tribal Affairs in the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
The President announced his intention to nominate Beverly Allen, Donald H. Dyal, and 
Jeffrey B. Rudman to be members of the 
National Museum and Library Services Board.
The President announced his intention to appoint Ronald R. Hall, David B. Jones, and

July 16

In the evening, in the State Dining Room, the President and Mrs. Bush 
hosted a social dinner in honor of Major League Baseball. Later, in the 
Rose Garden, they attended a performance by entertainer Kenny 
Chesney.

July 17

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
had a video teleconference with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki of Iraq.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Redding, CA, where, upon 
arrival, he met with USA Freedom Corps volunteers and Boy Scouts Mark 
Hendrick, Jake Wellman, and Alex Braden. Then, at the 
U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region Headquarters, he 
participated in a briefing on wildfire damage and firefighting efforts. 
Later, he traveled to Napa, CA.
In the evening, at a private residence, the President attended a 
Republican National Committee dinner. Later, he traveled to Tucson, AZ.
The President announced his intention to nominate John A. Simon to be U.S. Representative to the African Union with 
the rank and status of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

July 18

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, at a 
private residence, he attended a Tim Bee for 
Congress and Arizona Trust reception. He then traveled to Davis-Monthan 
Air Base, where he met with

Later in the morning, the President traveled to Houston, TX, arriving in 
the afternoon.
Later in the afternoon, at a private residence, the President attended 
an Olson for Congress and Texas Victory Committee 
reception. He then traveled to the Bush Ranch in Crawford, TX, arriving 
in the evening.
The President declared a major disaster in Nebraska and ordered Federal 
aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by 
severe storms, straight-line winds, and flooding on June 27.

July 19

the Oval Office, he participated in a photo opportunity with Catharine

national ambassador. Then, in the Library, he participated in an 
interview for a television tribute to Rev. William F. Graham, 
Jr.

July 22

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Marietta, GA, where, upon 
arrival, he met with USA Freedom Corps volunteer Sherri Goggin. He then traveled to Atlanta, GA, where, at a private 
residence, he attended a Goddard-Georgia 
Victory Committee reception. Later, he returned to Washington, DC, 
arriving in the evening.

July 23

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, in 
the Oval Office, he participated in a bill signing ceremony for H.R. 
3403, the New and Emerging Technologies 911 Improvement Act of 2008. He 
then dropped by a meeting between National Security Adviser Stephen J. 
Hadley and Minister of Defense Juan Manuel 
Santos Calderon of Colombia.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Arlington, VA, where, at the 
Pentagon, he participated in Defense Department briefings. Later, he 
returned to Washington, DC. Then, in the East Room, he participated in a 
photo opportunity with the 2008 Boys and Girls Nation delegates.
Later in the afternoon, in the Oval Office, the President participated 
in a signing ceremony for a Presidential proclamation in honor of the 
60th anniversary of the integration of the U.S. Armed Forces. He then 
attended a reception for Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin.
The President announced the designation of the following individuals as 
members of a Presidential delegation to attend the closing ceremony of 
the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, on August 24:

Hurricane Dolly beginning on July 22 and continuing.

July 25

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
traveled to Peoria, IL, where, upon arrival, he met with USA Freedom

July 29

the Oval Office, he and Mrs. Bush participated in a bill signing 
ceremony for H.R. 1553, the Caroline Price Walker Conquer Childhood 
Cancer Act of 2008.
During the day, the President met with Chinese human rights activists 
Bob Fu, Sasha Gong, Ciping 
Huang, Rebiya Kadeer, 
Wei Jingsheng, Harry Wu, 
and interpreter Alim Seytoff. Later, he dropped 
by a meeting between National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley and Minister of Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi of China.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Cleveland, OH, where, upon 
arrival, he met with USA Freedom Corps volunteer Linda 
Campbell. Later, he traveled to Euclid, OH, 
where he toured Lincoln Electric Company. He then traveled to Gates 
Mills, OH, where, at a private residence, he attended a Congressional 
Trust 2008 reception.
In the evening, the President stopped by the home of Gates Mills, OH, 
resident Ruth E. Harris to wish her a happy 
91st birthday. He then returned to Washington, DC. While en route aboard 
Air Force One, he participated in a bill signing ceremony for S. 2766, 
the Clean Boating Act of 2008.
The President announced his intention to nominate Patrick W. 
Dunne to be Under Secretary for Benefits at 
the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The President announced his intention to nominate James A. Slutz to be Assistant Secretary of Energy (Fossil Energy) 
and to designate him as Acting.
The President announced his intention to appoint B. Jackson 
Miller, Dana M. Muir, and John J. Szczur as members 
of the Advisory Committee to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

July 30

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Then, in the 
East Room, he participated in a photo opportunity with recipients of the 
Scouts in Action Commendation and the families of Boy Scouts who where 
killed during the June 11 tornado in Little Sioux, IA. Later, he 
traveled to Lewisburg, WV, where, upon arrival, he met with USA Freedom 
Corps volunteer Jackie Goodall.
Later in the morning, the President traveled to White Sulphur Springs, 
WV. Later, he traveled to the Bush family home in Kennebunkport, ME, 
arriving in the afternoon.
The White House announced that the President, Mrs. Bush, and their 
daughter Barbara will attend the opening 
ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, on August 8 along with 
the following members of the Presidential delegation:

The President announced that he has nominated Deborah Hersman to be a member of the National Transportation Safety 
Board.
The President announced that he has nominated Gregori Lebedev to be U.S. Representative to the United Nations for 
U.N. Management and Reform, with the rank of Ambassador, and Alternate 
U.S. Representative to the Sessions of the United Nations General 
Assembly.
The President announced that he has nominated Sung Y. Kim to be accorded the rank of Ambassador during his tenure of 
service as Special Envoy for the Six-Party Talks.

August 2

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
had a telephone conversation with President Luiz Inacio Lula da 
Silva of Brazil to discuss the 
recent World Trade Organization Doha round negotiations in Geneva, 
Switzerland.

August 3

In the morning, the President and Mrs. Bush returned to Washington, DC.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Camp David, MD. Later, he 
welcomed and met with Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister Muhammad Bin 
Rashid Al Maktum of the United 
Arab Emirates.

August 4

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
met with Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister Muhammad Bin Rashid Al 
Maktum of the United Arab 
Emirates.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Andrews Air Force Base, MD, 
where he was joined by Mrs. Bush. They then traveled to Eielson Air 
Force Base, AK. While en route aboard Air Force One, he participated in 
an interview with Michael Abramowitz of 
the Washington Post.
Later in the afternoon, upon arrival at Eielson Air Force Base, the 
President met with USA Freedom Corps volunteer Caroline White. He and 
Mrs. Bush then greeted and participated in photo opportunities with U.S. 
military personnel. Later, he met with the family of a soldier killed in 
the war on terror.
In the evening, the President and Mrs. Bush traveled to Seoul, South 
Korea, crossing the international dateline and arriving the following 
evening.

August 5

In the morning, aboard Air Force One, the President had an intelligence 
briefing.
In the evening, upon arrival at Seoul Air Base, South Korea, the 
President and Mrs. Bush participated in an arrival ceremony. They then 
traveled to the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel.
The President announced his intention to appoint Mark V. 
Rosenker as Vice Chairman of the National 
Transportation Safety Board.

August 6

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
and Mrs. Bush traveled to the U.S. Embassy, where they met with Embassy 
staff and their families. They then traveled to the Blue House 
Presidential residence, where, in the Grand Garden, they participated in 
an arrival ceremony with President Lee Myung-bak of South Korea and his wife Kim Yoon-ok.

Later in the morning, at the Spring House, the President and Mrs. Bush 
had tea and participated in a social lunch with President Lee and his wife Kim Yoon-ok.
In the afternoon, the President and Mrs. Bush traveled to U.S. Army 
Garrison--Yongsan. Later, they traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, arriving 
in the evening.
Later in the evening, the President traveled to the Government House, 
where he participated in a working dinner with Prime Minister Samak 
Sundaravej of Thailand. Later, he traveled 
to the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok, where he was joined by Mrs. Bush.

August 7

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. He then 
traveled to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. Later, he 
toured the Human Development Foundation--Mercy Centre.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to the U.S. Ambassador's 
residence, where he participated in a briefing on Cyclone Nargis 
disaster relief efforts in Burma. Later, he traveled to Don Muang Royal 
Thai Air Force Base, where he was joined by Mrs. Bush. They then 
traveled to Beijing, China, arriving in the evening.
Later in the evening, upon arrival in Beijing, the President and Mrs. 
Bush traveled to the Westin Beijing Chaoyang hotel.
The President announced the designation of the following individuals as 
members of a Presidential delegation to Asuncion, Paraguay, to attend 
the inauguration of President Fernando Armindo Lugo Mendez on August 15:

    Carlos M. Gutierrez (head of

The President announced the designation of the following individuals as 
members of a Presidential delegation to Santo Domingo, Dominican

The President announced that he has named Brian Cossiboom as Special Assistant to the President for Presidential 
Personnel.
The President announced that he has named J. Keith Ausbrook as Special Assistant to the President and Executive 
Secretary on the Homeland Security Council staff.

August 8

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. He and Mrs. 
Bush then traveled to the U.S. Embassy, where they met with Embassy 
staff and their families. Later, they traveled to the Great Hall of the 
People.
In the afternoon, the President and Mrs. Bush attended a social 
reception and lunch hosted by President Hu Jintao 
of China and his wife Liu Yongqing. During the 
reception, he met with Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin of Russia to discuss the situation in Georgia.
In the evening, the President and Mrs. Bush traveled to Fencing Hall, 
where they met with International Olympic Committee President Jacques 
Rogge. Later, they traveled to National 
Stadium, where they attended the opening ceremony of the 2008 summer 
Olympic Games. During the ceremony, he met again with Prime Minister 
Putin to discuss the situation in Georgia.
Later in the evening, the President and Mrs. Bush returned to the Westin 
Beijing Chaoyang hotel, where he met with Secretary of State Condoleezza 
Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen 
J. Hadley to discuss the situation in 
Georgia.

August 9

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. He was then 
briefed by Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs Principal Deputy Assistant 
Secretary of State James F. Jeffrey and 
National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley on the situation in Georgia. Later, he traveled to the 
Chaoyang Park Olympic beach volleyball venue, where he attended a U.S. 
men's and women's Olympic beach volleyball teams practice.
Later in the morning, the President traveled to the Fengtai Olympic 
softball field, where he attended a U.S. Olympic softball team practice.
In the afternoon, the President returned to the Westin Beijing Chaoyang 
hotel. Later, he

attended a reception with chief executive officer sponsors of the 2008 
U.S. summer Olympic team. They then returned to the Westin hotel.

telephone conversation with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss her January 6 trip to the United 
Nations.

During the day, the President had separate telephone conversations with 
congressional leaders.
The President announced the designation of the following individuals as 
members of a Presidential delegation to Accra, Ghana, to attend the 
inauguration of President John Evans Atta Mills on January 7: Ronald A. Tschetter (head of delegation); Donald G. Teitelbaum; and R. Timothy Ziemer.
The President announced his intention to appoint Robert D. McCallum, 
Jr., as a member of the J. William 
Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
The President announced his intention to appoint Martin Faga as a member of the Public Interest Declassification 
Board.
The President announced his intention to appoint the following

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, in 
the Oval Office, he met with President-elect Barack Obama.
In the afternoon, in the Oval Office, the President participated in a 
photo opportunity with former Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and 
William J. Clinton and President-elect 
Barack Obama. Then, in the Private Dining Room, 
he hosted a lunch for the former Presidents and President-elect Obama. 
Later, at DAR Constitution Hall, he made remarks to Presidential 
appointees.

January 8

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
and Mrs. Bush traveled to Philadelphia, PA, where, at the General Philip 
Kearny School, he met with USA Freedom Corps volunteer Adam 
Bruckner. They then visited several classrooms 
and met with students.
Later in the morning, the President and Mrs. Bush participated in a 
roundtable discussion on the No Child Left Behind Act.
In the afternoon, the President and Mrs. Bush returned to Washington, 
DC.

January 9

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, at 
the Bolling Club at Bolling Air Force Base, he visited with White House 
Communications Agency and White House Transportation Agency staff.
The President declared a major disaster in Maine and ordered Federal aid 
to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by a 
severe winter storm and flooding from December 11 to 29.

January 10

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he 
and Mrs. Bush traveled to Norfolk, VA.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Naval Amphibious Base Little 
Creek, VA, where

Force Base, MD, where, in the Air Force One hangar, he visited the 
Presidential Airlift Group. He then returned to Washington, DC.
The White House announced that the President will welcome President 
Felipe de Jesus Calderon Hinojosa of Mexico to the White House on 
January 13.

January 12

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing.
In the afternoon, in the Oval Office, the President and former President 
George H.W. Bush participated in an interview with Ninoska Perez 
Castellon of Radio Mambi.
The President announced his intention to appoint Robin Hayes, Susan C. Schwab, and 
Richard J. Tubb as members of the Board of 
Visitors to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The President announced his intention to designate Patrick Ward as Acting Director of the Office of National Drug 
Control Policy.

January 13

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing.
The President declared an emergency in the District of Columbia and 
ordered Federal aid to supplement District response efforts in support 
of the 56th Presidential Inauguration.

January 14

In the afternoon, in the East Room, the President met with and made 
remarks to family members of U.S. servicemembers killed in Afghanistan 
and Iraq.
The President declared a major disaster in Vermont and ordered Federal 
aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by 
a severe winter storm from December 11 to 18.

the State Department, he met with Foreign Service officers and State 
Department employees.

In the afternoon, the President and Mrs. Bush traveled to Camp David, 
MD.

the Department of Justice.

the Oval Office, he had several telephone conversations with current and 
former world leaders.
In the afternoon, on the State Floor, the President and former President 
George H.W. Bush participated in an 
interview with historian Richard Norton Smith.

January 20

In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, on 
the North Portico, he and Mrs. Bush welcomed President-elect Barack 
Obama and his wife Michelle. Then, in the Blue Room, they had coffee with 
President-elect Obama and Mrs. Obama, Vice President-elect Joseph R. 
Biden, Jr., and his wife Jill, and the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural 
Ceremonies leadership.
Later in the morning, at the U.S. Capitol, the President and Mrs. Bush 
participated in the swearing-in ceremony for President-elect Barack 
Obama.
