Gerald R. Ford became the 38th President of the United States when he succeeded to that office following the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon in 1974. He served as President until 1977, when he was succeeded by President Jimmy Carter. Previously, Ford represented Michigan’s 5th District in the House of Representatives beginning in 1949 until his nomination to the Vice Presidency by President Nixon in 1973, following the resignation of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew.

Nancy Reagan was a former first lady of the United States and the widow of President Ronald Reagan. Both Nancy and Ronald Reagan had backgrounds in acting and were married in 1952. She was an adviser to her husband and served as first lady of California before moving into the White House in 1981. Her major initiative was the "Just Say No" drug awareness campaign. When her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, she pushed for stem-cell research and, together with the Alzheimer’s Association, established the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute.

James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr. was the 39th President of the United States (1977-1981) and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

On February 3, 1995, Lieutenant Colonel Eileen Collins became the first woman to pilot a space shuttle, flying the STS-114 Discovery to the Russian Mir space station. On July 23, 1999, she became the first woman commander of a space shuttle mission, the STS-93 Columbia. This mission carried the newest telescope since the Hubble, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, which captured images in deep space.

After being held as a POW for 5 ½ years in North Vietnam, Lieut. Commander McCain was released on May 14, 1973. Nine years later in 1982 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona. In 1986 he was elected to the United States Senate. Throughout his tenure in Congress, he offered intelligent thoughts and proposed actions on various conflicts and wars, among other topics, gaining respect among his colleagues and the public.
