World AIDS Day is observed annually on December 1st. It is a day of solidarity for people around the world who are affected by HIV, and an opportunity for people globally to show their support for people living with HIV, remember those who have died, and unite in the fight against HIV.
“The 35th commemoration of World AIDS Day is an opportunity to reflect on our journey, acknowledge and celebrate the progress we’ve made, and recognize the challenges remaining. However, many people with HIV still lack access to essential healthcare and support services. We must strive to increase equitable access and outcomes for HIV testing, prevention, treatment, and care services. The battle is far from over.”
In 1988, two World Health Organization public information officers wanted to provide a platform to bring international awareness about HIV and AIDS. This day is also a day to connect policies and programs around the globe and focus campaigns around themes related to HIV and AIDS. This year's theme, "World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit," reflects on the journey and recognizing the challenges ahead, while also celebrating the progress that has been made in HIV testing, prevention, treatment and services. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Since its inception in 2003, PEPFAR has partnered with over 50 countries to provide support for efforts to control the HIV epidemic and strengthen global health.
