What is the Economic Report of the President

The Economic Report of the President is an annual report written by the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. It overviews the nation's economic progress using text and extensive data appendices. The Economic Report of the President is transmitted to Congress no later than ten days after the submission of the Budget of the United States Government. Supplementary reports can be issued to the Congress which contain additional and/or revised recommendations.

The Economic Report of the President is issued by the Executive Office of the President and the Council of Economic Advisers. It includes:

  • Current and foreseeable trends and annual numerical goals concerning topics such as employment, production, real income and Federal budget outlays.
  • Employment objectives for significant groups of the labor force.
  • Annual numeric goals.
  • A program for carrying out program objectives.

The Economic Report of the President is transmitted to Congress no later than ten days after the submission of the Budget of the United States Government. Supplementary reports can be issued to the Congress which contain additional and/or revised recommendations.

Included in the Economic Report of the President is the Annual Report of the Council of Economic Advisers. Each year, the Council of Economic Advisers submits this report on its activities during the previous calendar year in accordance with the requirements of the Congress as set forth in section 10(d) of the Employment Act of 1946 as amended by the Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act of 1978.

What is available?
  • The Economic Report of the President has been published since 1950 and is available on GovInfo from 1995 forward. Documents are available in ASCII text and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), with many of the tables also available for separate viewing and downloading as spreadsheets in XLS and comma delimited formats.
  • Economic Indicators back to 1948 are made available through FRASER, the Federal Reserve Archival System for Economic Research. FRASER is provided through a partnership between GPO and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. FRASER  is not an official version of Economic Indicators and GPO cannot guarantee the authenticity or completeness of the data.

Searching the Economic Report of the President

You can find and search the Economic Report of the President by:

  • Using Basic Search for keyword and metadata fielded searches,
